Guar gum is a macromolecular natural hydrophilic colloid.

Hydroxypropyl guar gum is a natural galactomannan and one of the quality-improving agents; it is a natural thickening agent. It appears as a free-flowing powder ranging in color from white to pale yellow, soluble in both cold and hot water. Upon contact with water, it forms a gel-like substance that rapidly increases viscosity. It is primarily available in two grades: food-grade and industrial-grade (the industrial-grade is used in oilfield applications). Typically, export packaging consists of 25 kg per bag, with an outer layer of kraft paper and an inner layer of PE film bags. This product is widely used for thickening purposes in oil fracturing, drilling operations, as well as in food additives, dyeing and printing, and architectural coatings. Guar gum is known as the most effective and highly water-soluble natural polymer available. At low concentrations, it can form highly viscous solutions and exhibits non-Newtonian rheological properties. When combined with borax, it forms an acid-reversible gel. Due to its unique properties, guar gum finds applications in various industries including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, petroleum, adhesives, papermaking, and textile dyeing and printing.
